Inaugural Lecture - Professor James Cooper
6.00 PM to 7.00 PM
Wed 25 November, 2026
What’s In It For Me? Reflections on self-interest, character, and leadership in the Reagan-Thatcher era
Please come and join us for this fascinating Inaugural Lecture.
Why do leaders do what they do? The cynical answer – self-interest, calculation, the pursuit of power – is true, but it is never the whole truth. Drawing on twenty years of research into Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, and the Anglo-American relationship.
Professor James Cooper argues that leadership is more calculated and more genuine, more constrained and more consequential, than either its admirers or its critics allow. From a Worcestershire classroom to the archives of presidents and prime ministers, Jim reflects on a historian's journey – and on why we should resist the verdict that arrives before the understanding does.
All are welcome; no prior knowledge required.
There will be a drinks reception after this event.
